Locked out of our windows 7 laptop what can we do?

My girlfriend changed the password before going to bed and the next morning couldn't get back into the computer. We've tried everything I could think of or find online and with no success. A local computer shop will do it but for a price. Any ideas how I can save some $$ and gain access to my PC?
