Why do people say "to be gypped"?

Reading up a bit on it. It seems that in the middle ages (the thirteenth centry) that the byzantines recorded that the Romans thought of the egyptians as spies or that gypsies were known as thieves. Bringing forth todays derogatory slang "gypped".
