Why is spanking seen as abuse when it is an effective method of discipline?

I don't think that it's effective because you don't create respect, only fear. How can you spank your kids and then expect them not to hit their siblings and/or other children? You should be intelligent enough to know how to set a good example without resorting to hitting. Just take away a toy the kid likes and make them earn it back through good behavior.
