Why is spanking seen as abuse when it is an effective method of discipline?

Personally, I think that spanking should be reserved for serious offenses such as if your children hit other kids, an animal, or act aggressively. Spanking should not be used for everyday discipline. As far as domestic discipline goes for your wife, she must agree to that treatment from you, or your marriage will suffer terribly. She will probably consider you to be abusive.
